Woven in two halves, the design of this kilim from Malatya, Turkey, aligns perfectly, not an easy achievement.  The white cotton is a nice enhancement to the fine wool, and is a perfect example of the flat weave that should be viewed horizontally.

 

Kilims were used as covers for the floor and for seating.  In the traditional Anatolian house, the salon was furnished with banquettes that also doubled as beds for visitors.  It is for these that many large Anatolian kilims were made, in a long and narrow fformat ideal for the back and seat of a banquette.  Wool and wool, natural dyes w/some synthetic dyes.
