Konya Kilim, 57”W x 110”L

Net Price:  $1,500.00

This Konya kilim design is almost the exact duplicate of a 19th century kilim shown in The Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Culture book, Anatolian Kilims I, printed in Turkey, 1995, number 064.  Its colors, however, are more subdued.

Woven in one piece and instead of borders, the long sides are framed by a red saw-tooth design with stick like projections, which forms a semi-reciprocal pattern in the combs as it joins the field.  Its’ mirror design and soft palette are typical of the region.  This piece is about 60 years old.

Konya kilims, such as this piece, have an amazing textile heritage.  Previously known as

Iconium, this is one of the oldest urban centers in the world:  according to Phrygian legend, Konya was the first city to rise from the waters after the great flood.  Excavations here have revealed bones from the Bronze Age (c.3000BC); as well as graphic patterned murals later to be translated in to textile motifs.
